Dear Wolf Pack Family, December 1, 2012
Speaking of
gratitude and memories, here are two stories from our school community that
have warmed my heart and given me pause for reflection. The first one is a celebration of a
collaborative community effort that resulted in the passing of issues 53 and 54
on November 6th. This was an
amazing, concerted effort that involved our Board of Education, our parents,
our entire staff and students. This kind
of coming together does not happen in every community, so I continue to be
thankful that I get to be a part of such a wonderful district. And I’ll never forget the drive and energy of
Mrs. Stephanie Donaldson and Mrs. Julie O’Donnell who bleed Black and
Blue. At the first planning meeting for
issues 53 and 54 they had me fired up and prepared to get the Kilbourne community
involved, which didn’t take much. Our
teachers, parents, and students went above and beyond to work phone banks,
knock on doors and plant yard signs. So
a big thanks to all of you for demonstrating once again that Worthington
thrives on this kind of family togetherness and strength.
My second
story unfolded over a several week period with a student-driven celebration of
caring. Our students never cease to
amaze me with their compassion and willingness to sacrifice for others. As most of you know, Grayson Biglin, a
student at WKHS, was recently diagnosed with cancer. When our students heard the news, they
launched a support movement that included painting the spirit rock and a “Buzz
4 Biglin” event to raise money for the Children’s Hospital Oncology Unit.
The idea started with 5 WKHS students: Will Good, Taylor
Wilson, Matt Wylly, John Watson, Jake Roberts and culminated in several male
students having their beautiful locks buzz cut in the commons on Friday,
November 9th. Initially only three
students volunteered to go under the trimmers but by the time Mrs. Rinehart, from
Kenneth’s Salon nearly fried her trimmers, 15 plus boys joined in solidarity
with Grayson. We also had a group of 6
students: Justin Souder, Ray Trombetti,
Avery Korn, Luke Hackathorne, Griffin Dahn and Grayson Biglin get their buzz
cut back in September to begin the show of support. That’s what I’m talking about when you hear
me say we have amazing students at Kilbourne.
It’s just one more example of how the power of student ownership in
their school can make a difference.
Thanks to the parents of these young men for allowing us to learn that
some of the best lessons in life emerge from commitment and compassion.
I am so proud to be a part of your lives. Thanks for all that you do to support
Kilbourne!
